Clubs rise to the Challenge

This Saturday there are five matches scheduled to be played and they are all in the South’s most prestigious competition.

The Challenge Cup first round ties look as if they could favour the away teams in at least three of the contests.

Wigtown and Bladnoch play Nithsdale Wanderers at Trammondford, which is an unlikely venue for an upset with the home side losing out. Wigtown are having a very good and consistent season, whereas the Sanqhuar side are blowing a bit hot and cold.

The match could, however, go close but on present form the home side are the likelier to progress.

Crichton play host to neighbours Abbey Vale at Hospital Park in a match that could go either way depending on the team that hits form on the day. Both sides have proven goal-scorers in their ranks so there could well be a few goals from each team to keep the supporters happy and on their toes.

This contest could well take more than the regulation 90 minutes to find a winner.

St Cuthbert Wanderers visit Castle Cary Park to play Creetown in a tie that they will be strong favourites to win.

Saints are a very experienced side and should be able to see off any challenge that Creetown can mount, although it may be a close first period with the home side digging in to keep their visitors at bay.

However, the Kirkcudbright side should go through to round two on the present form of both clubs.

Threave Rovers travel the short distance to Gatehouse to play Fleet Star, and although the home side will as usual give their all it would be a shock result if at the end of 90 minutes the result was anything other than a comfortable victory for the Castle Douglas side.

Dalbeattie Star travel to Blairmount Park to play Newton Stewart for a contest that usually goes close although the league leaders will start the match as favourites to progress.

The Creesiders, though, can be a handful on their own pitch and are expected to give a good account of themselves in a close-run match.

Fixtures for Saturday, February 16.
