If you were in Newton Stewart on Sunday you may well have thought that Christmas had come early.

It was perhaps the hottest day of the summer so far, but that didn’t put off the 76 runners, dressed in Santa hats, who took part in Newton Stewart Round Table’s inaugural Santa dash.

Once the fun run was over the serious competition began as 31 walkers and 66 runners set off on the 10 km ‘roon the risk’ route, taking in fabulous views of the Galloway hills and forest park.

See page 43 for more on the 10k.

The Round Table has been overwhelmed by the support shown by the local community for the event and the Tabler who was the inspiration behind the event, Andy Sharples said: “We have been working tirelessly since February this year and wow, what a turnout! It’s been a wonderful experience and whether you have walked, run or even dashed with Santa for the first time, I would you like to thank you for taking part.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this great community.”

Round Table Chairman, David McCathie said: “Thanks to everyone who made the event possible, particularly, those who gave up their time to help us on the day. Thanks also to Newton Stewart Golf Club, the local businesses that sponsored us and to the Galloway Association of Glasgow who provided us with a £450 start-up grant for the event. The day has been so successful that we are intending to make the Newton Stewart 10k and Santa dash an annual event.”

Santa said “It was awful hot out there today. I’m really looking forward to the winter and some cooler weather. Ho, ho, ho!”

Newton Stewart Round Table are having their next meeting at 7.30pm in the Galloway Arms on Tuesday 8th September. If you’d like to become a member then you can contact them via their website at www.nsroundtable.org.uk
