In her first ever Mull Rally, 16-year-old Charlotte McDowall from Creetown has become a winner.

Co-driving for her father Jim in their Motorwise and Minnigaff MOT Centre-sponsored Hillman Avenger, they won the Historic class by more than 10 minutes from their nearest rival, Beefy Fraser from Inverness, also in a Hillman Avenger.

The rally took place over three days and nights in October on the island and is held on closed roads with 155 miles of competitive stages. The car, after an initial brake problem, ran faultlesly and finished 41st overall from a field of 125.

This was Jim’s 29th appearance on Mull, which some regard as “the best rally in the world”and is certainly one of the toughest.

Also competing was Robert Sherry from Carsluith, who was co driving for Norman McPail from Mull in their Ford Escort.

Charlotte and Jim managed to beat the duo by the small margin of seven seconds and there is now a challenge between the two crews at this weekend’s Crail Stages in Fife to restore honours to the Ford team. However, in an attempt to do so, Norman and Robert are borrowing Jim`s Ford Focus.
