Challenge cup sees some close games

There were some exciting and close results last weekend in the second round of the South’s most prestigious cup competition - the Challenge Cup.

The closest contest was at New Abbey where Abbey Vale held Wigtown and Bladnoch to a 3-3 draw after extra time with the visitors going through in a penalty shootout 4-3. Robert Paisley and Richard Jones put Wigtown ahead before Nicky Baxter pulled a goal back for Vale. Paisley scored a third for Wigtown before being red carded.

Colin Carnochan scored a second for the home side and a Lee Malin header sent the match into extra time after both sides had been reduced to ten men with Vale goal scorer Baxter being sent off. There were no further goals in the extra time period but Wigtown went on to go through to round three following a penalty shootout.

Dumfries YMCA put up a good fight against Lochar Thistle but went down eventually 4-2 as did Fleet Star in their tie against Edusport Academy. St Cuthbert Wanderers recorded a comfortable 4-0 victory over a young Annan Athletic side at St Mary’s Park with Roman Soltys scoring as hat-trick to add to a single from Stephen Degnan. The match between Upper Annandale and Mid Annandale was switched to the 3G pitch at Lockerbie with the Moffat pitch unplayable and the Lockerbie side used the advantage to win the contest by the odd goal in three.

Denver Milligan put Mids ahead in the first half but Mark Leighfield levelled the match in the 54th minute. Milligan though scored eleven minutes later to restore Mids lead and with 15 minutes left to play Henderson was red carded leaving the Lockerbie side to play the match out with ten men.

On Friday night at Palmerston Park Heston Rovers comfortably saw off the challenge from Nithsdale Wanderers with goals from Russell Jardine, Fraser McGhie and Russell Burgess.
