In August this year at Blair Castle International Horse Trials where the weather was glorious and the setting was stunning, Charlotte Armstrong riding Jane Dalrymple’s ‘Calo Cavalier’ competed in the open working hunter class and took first place against some tough competition.

The judges said that, ‘clear rounds were hard to come by but the last class of the day; they made the best job of it which reflected when Charlotte and ‘Calo Cavalier’ went on to take the overall working hunter title’. ‘Cal Cavalier” was brought from Ireland as a four year old by McNabney Horses, Barsalloch, Newton Stewart. She is by ‘Royale Touch’, sired by ‘Cavalier Royale’, and out of ‘Latteriff Mana’, an “Ard Ohio” mare. Shortly after Bryce, Jane and Alexander Dalrymple bought her they realised that she was quite a handful and although she showed great potential they needed professional help with her. After a year to run free with other horses, they enlisted Charlotte Armstrong, owner of CFA Performance Horses, Cotland farm, Bladnoch to work with her. A special partnership has formed and for the last three years they have successfully shown her at local and county level shows, qualifying for this year’s Blair Castle Horse Trials at Stranraer and District Riding Club’s Working Hunter Show. The Dalrymple family and Charlotte were absolutely delighted to win the open working hunter class which was only topped off by taking the best mare trophy and overall working hunter championship.

As well as the Dalrymples success, Sarah McIntyre on Charmeur Ikaria Z (Charmer) competed in the British Show Jumping at Blair, against some tough competition and was delighted when she achieved a third and fourth in the 1m10 qualifier and the 1m15 respectively against some of the biggest names in Scottish Showjumping. Kara Torrance on Meara Lad (Punch) qualified for the Style Jumping class on the Sunday at one of Stranraer and District’s Show Jumping events, where she achieved a clear round and was placed just out side of the rosettes.

Stranraer and District Riding Club Charity Horse Show

The fourth annual Charity Horse Show started off in showers, with some heavy downpours. Fortunately by lunchtime the rain had stopped and the sun came out. Competitors came from all over Wigtownshire and from as far afield as Dumfries to support the Club’s fundraising efforts for Stranraer Happy Hooves Riding for the Disabled Group and Wigtownshire Animal Welfare Association.

Judge Liz McLaughlin from Wigtown had a busy day judging the Show Ponies, Show Hunter Ponies and Mountain and Moorland classes. Mrs McLaughlin chose Lucy Fisher and Poppy as her champion with Libby Kay and Lacy Oliver as Reserve.

Judge David Goldie from Ayr judged the brood mares, young stock, coloureds and hunters, selecting Samantha Cloy and Ulstar de la Barre as his champion with Emily Forsyth and Rushfield Vice Versa as Reserve.

The sun came out for the judging of the Supreme Champion by both judges and Samantha Cloy and Ulstar de la Barre were selected to be the first to be presented with the new Dr John Calvert Trophy by Mrs Pat Calvert. This beautiful new trophy of a horse and hound had been presented by family and friends of Dr Calvert in his memory. Reserve Supreme Champions were Libby Kay and Lacy Oliver.

After the showing was completed many people came forward to help build the showjumping course directed by Louise Griffiths. The pony classes were well filled with everyone vying for the many trophies on offer. The horse classes did not have as many entries but the competition was still fierce.

The Pet Show was held mid afternoon with local vet, Ian McDonald, judging the many entries. Mr McDonald selected the lovely Yellow Labrador Bailley, led by Letitia Brown as his champion, with the Terrier Buster, led by Caitlin McCornick as Reserve Champion.

Grateful thanks to all the judges, stewards and helpers who gave their time to make the day such a success, raising over £1,000 to share between the two charities. Special thanks to Sheena, Daniel, Pauline, Jane, Gillian, Caitlin, Mhairi, Julie, Sue and to Debbie for parking duties.
