Oban Lorne 23, Stewartry 35
Stewartry chose to kick off and within three minutes Oban were penalised on their 22 for not rolling away from the tackle. Dissent from a home player gave the visitors another 10 metres. At the lineout Ian Fenwick took the ball and the forwards went over the Oban line but the ball was held up.
From the five-metre scrum, Fenwick picked up the ball but was stopped short but Martin Smith cleaned up at the ruck and went in for a converted try.
Oban’s restart went to the Blacks’ forwards. Moving the ball quickly to John Muir, he found space on the left wing and touched down under the posts. Craig Mosey converted.
Eight minutes in, Stewartry gave away a penalty on their 22 for offside allowing the home team to grab three points.
Midway through the first half Stewartry got a lineout 10 metres out from the home line. The forwards drove over allowing Kerr McMinn to get a try which Mosey again converted.
Both teams then had a series of kicks up and down the pitch. Then Oban made a break up the right wing. With a textbook tackle fullback John Fingland stopped the Oban player 10 metres short of the line.
At the scrum the Blacks were again offside. The home side took a lineout, winning the ball and tried to drive forward. After five phases Oban broke through the Stewartry defence to score in the 25th minute. The conversion missed.
Half an hour into the game the home side got a penalty 10 metres from the Blacks’ line because Stewartry held on to the ball in the ruck. Oban took the ball at the lineout and went over the Blacks line but it was a double movement.
Oban were then penalised because of comments made to the referee by home supporters. Then dissent from a player took Stewartry up another 10 metres allowing them to clear their lines.
Two minutes from half-time the ball came out to T J McCarney who broke forward only to be stopped on the home 22. Picking up the ball, Mosey chipped it up the right wing. Good follow-up play saw John Muir take the ball, run through three tackles and get another converted try under the posts for a 28-8 half-time lead.
Ten minutes into the second half Stuart Broll replaced Tommy Cannon. The Blacks gave away a penalty on their 22 and after a tap kick Oban dropped the ball only for T J McCarney to pick itup the ball and run in for another converted try under the posts.
Oban won a scrum and sent the ball out wide to run in a try. The conversion went wide. Liam Henderson replaced Martin Smith.
The home team kicked up their right wing. Fingland secured the ball but was pushed into touch. Oban won the lineout and sent it over to the opposite wing allowing their fullback in for an unconverted try.
In the last quarter Tommy Cannon went back on to replace Ian McMorran, Jordan Jamieson replaced Kerr McMinn and David Thomson went on for Jamie Farquhar.
With 10 minutes left Steven Hogg and Stevie McCulloch were replaced by Henry Sainsbury and John Picken.
Five minutes from the final whistle Steven Hogg went back on in place of T J McCarney. Stewartry got a scrum just inside their own territory but it wheeled giving Oban the put-in at the reset. They won the heel and sent the ball wide to get a try on the left wing. The conversion was wide.
