Blacks bounce back

Stewartry 36, Cambuslang 33

Stewartry opted to kick off in the first home game for Stewartry in the RBS West League Division Two this season.

An early midfield scrum gave the home team possession. Kicking the ball forward, it went over the deadball line. The visitors’ dropout went straight into touch, giving the Blacks a lineout on the Cambuslang 22. The ball went back to Ian Fenwick, who ran in to score Stewartry’s first try, though the convertion went wide.

A Stewartry penalty saw the ball go to Stuart Broll, who made ground toward the visitors line but he was stopped short. The Blacks were penalised for not releasing the ball allowing Cambuslang to kick back down field.

The lineout throw in on the visitors’ 22 was not straight, giving Stewartry a free kick. The ball went out to T J McCarney. Playing in his first 1st XV game, he went in for a try which was converted by Craig Mosey.

Midway through the first half Cambuslang got a penalty on halfway. After a quick tap, the ball went wide to their right winger, who scored the visitors’ first converted try.

Then the Blacks gave away another penalty 10 metres out from their line. Taking a quick kick, Cambuslang got a converted try under the posts, giving them a 14-12 lead.

From the second of two scrums on the home 22, the visitors broke up the right wing and poor Stewartry tackling allowed Cambuslang in for another converted try.

On the half-hour Ian McMorran substituted his cousin Alistair.

Cambuslang were penalised for not releasing and Stewartry got a lineout five metres from the visitors’ line. The ball went forward giving the Blacks a scrum. Cambuslang got the heal but they fumbled the ball, allowing Ian Fenwick to intercept and get in for another try which Mosey converted just on half time with the score at Stewartry 19, Cambuslang 21.

Five minutes into the second half, Cambuslang got a free kick. Their number 13 charged up the wing, through poor defensive tackles and scored and unconverted try.

Steven Hogg replaced T J McCarney. Ten minutes into the second period, with a scrum on halfway, the ball went back to John Muir who broke up the right wing but he was stopped short. Cambuslang won the ball from the scrum and cleared the it away. Catching the ball David Kerr ran up into the visitors’ 22. Good support play from Danny Boyd saw him pass to Cammy Fenwick, who went in for a bonus point converted try.

Stevie McCulloch went on in place of Liam Henderson. From a lineout on the visitors’ 10-metre line, the Blacks took the ball, which went to Danny Boyd who scored. The conversion went wide.

Into the last quarter Cambuslang tried to keep the ball in hand but a dropped pass allowed John Muir to kick forward. His grubber kick put the ball over the line for a touchdown.

With eight minutes left, John Fingland went on in place of David Kerr. After a scrum on the home five-metre line the Blacks were penalised for handling in the ruck. The visitors took a quick tap kick and nipped in for a converted try under the posts.

This was a better performance by Stewartry from the previous week but there are areas where they could improve.
