There was a strange statistic thrown up last weekend in South football with the home teams in all matches scoring only three goals between them and the away sides scoring a total of 27.
In five of the seven games played the home sides failed to score with only Newton Stewart scoring two in a drawn match against Wigtown at Blairmount Park and Fleet Star managing only a single consolation goal in a cup tie at Garries Park against Nithsdale Wanderers.
Both the leading sides were in league action with present leaders Edusport Academy playing Abbey Vale and second placed St Cuthbert Wanderers playing near neighbours Creetown at Castle Cary Park. Edu recorded a 5-0 victory with goals coming from Morgan Lafont with a hat-trick and singes from Corentin Gretna and Baradji Chechevmer to maintain their slender lead at the top of the table.
St Cuthbert Wanderers also had a comfortable victory with a 4-0 victory over Creetown with Andrew Donely scoring a double and Scott Milligan and Roman Soltys scoring a goal apiece. Dumfries YMCA played hosts to Mid-Annandale when the visitors were favourites to get back on track and claim the three points and did so in another 4-0 victory. Denver Milligan opened the scoring with a header after only six minutes play with Nathan Muir adding a second three minutes before the break.
Sam Copeland scored goal number three six minutes into the second half and Muir wrapped up the points with a headed fourth goal 15 minutes from time. There was a local Dumfries derby at Palmerston Park where Heston Rovers entertained neighbours Lochar Thistle in what turned out to be a one sided contest with the visitors finding the net no fewer than six times.
Under the management of new manager Craig Fraser, Keiran Kreuse and Ryan Coates gave Lochar a two goal advantage at the break with Coates adding another after the re-start. Lee Martin scored a double and Ryan Service added another to complete the rout.
There was another derby match at Blairmount Park where Newton Stewart locked horns with Wigtown and Bladnoch with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. It was expected that the result of this encounter would be close but when the visitors took a two goal lead through Robert Jamieson and Reece Agnew it didn’t look that way. However the Creesiders fought back and goals from Robert Middleton and a late equaliser from substitute Aaron McGuire saw the two teams sharing the points.
In the South Challenge Cup Round two Fleet Star had Nithsdale Wanderers as their visitors to Gatehouse and went down by 4-1. In Round Two of the South League Cup Crichton played Upper Annandale at Hospital Park with the visitors progressing by virtue of a 2-0 victory.
