Stranraer get off to Cup start
THE Blues have landed their first silverware of the season - after beating Annan Athletic 3-0 in the final of the Brewers Cup at the weekend.
Stranraer - this week drawn at home against Morton in the first round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup - travelled to Annan for the pre-season event buoyed by a strong squad.
On the first day, Stranraer saw off Spartans in a very comfortable 2-0 win. In the other game, Workington Town had been beaten 4-3 on penalties after drawing 2-2 over 90 minutes.
Both Stranraer and Annan played decent early football in the final.
Stranraer recorded the first effort on goal on eight minutes when Craig Frizzel shot from the edge of the box, but saw his effort go over the bar.
On 25 minutes, Stranraer had another good opportunity when McBride played the ball forward and the Annan defender slipped. The ball skimmed off the defender and fell nicely to Michael Mullen, whose swift shot was well saved by former Gretna keeper Summersgill.
Annan responded by pressing forward almost immediately. Parker was given the ball on the edge of the box and his shot forced Scott Black into a good save.
Just before the break, the Blues' pressure told as some slick play through the midfield saw strikers McBride and Mullen burst through. McBride was in the clear and he glided forward and slotted the ball to the keeper's right and into the bottom corner to put Stranraer ahead.
As the second half started, both sides were playing some neat football. There was none of the long ball and the football was easy on the eye.
There were further goals as well, as Stranraer were awarded a penalty just after the hour when Danny Mitchell was upended in the box. Andy Gibson duly converted.
There then followed the usual spate of substitutions that are seen at pre-season games, but this actually added to the interest of the game as Glenn Mitchell was introduced on to the field of play, not only adding to the amount of Stranraer-based players on the park but also throwing up the question: How long was it since the last set of brothers played at the same time for Stranraer, let alone local boys?
The goal of the game came on 80 minutes when Craig Frizell was played inside after some intricate work by Danny Mitchell and Joe Savage and he struck a superbly executed shot that rounded off an excellent Stranraer FC performance.
There was even time for Scott Black to save an Annan penalty. The Blues won back the Brewers Cup and gave an encouraging display. Danny Mitchell picked up the Player of the Tournament Trophy. The early signs for the season are good.
