STRANRAER won their first trophy of the season on Monday night with a penalty shoot-out deciding the winner of the Potts Cup in their match against Creetown.

By John McNaught

Colin Carnochan found the net for Creetown with Stewart McColm equalising before the break and with no further goals in the second half of the match it was penalties that decided the outcome. Stranraer won the shoot out by four goals to two to win the silverware.
There was one South of Scotland League match played the same night when Mid-Annandale went down heavily at home to Nithsdale Wanderers by seven goals to nil in a drab end of season affair.
Annan Athletic made history on Saturday when they became the first ever winners of the new SFA Challenge Cup which replaced the former South Qualifying Cup competition.
They left it late however to clinch the silverware with the winner coming in the 91st minute of a very even match against Edinburgh City. Annan did it the hard way by going two goals behind when Scott Munroe scored in twenty five minutes and ten minutes later Robbie Ross made it two nil to the Capital side. Mike Jack pulled one back for Annan four minutes before the break to give the Galabank outfit a fighting chance. Annan took this chance in the second period of play with Darren Johnstone equalising four minutes after the break and the striker finding the winner in injury time, fully justifying his transfer fee from Glenafton Juniors at the start of the season.
Threave Rovers won the South Challenge Cup in a four nil victory over Mid-Annandale with Jamie Struthers and Mark McGinley scoring two each while Crichton won the Cree Lodge Cup with a three goal to nil victory over St Cuthbert Wanderers. Two goals from Willie Beattie, one from the penalty spot and a single from Gary Kerr gave the league winners their second trophy of the season both won in the same week.
In the South of Scotland League Creetown played Abbey Vale on Friday night when another Roman Saltys hat-trick and singles from Ryan McKie and Barry White was enough to secure another three points. Nithsdale Wanderers struck three times without reply in their match against Stranraer Athletic to maintain their mid-table position. Sim, Frew and Muir were the scorers for the Sanquhar side.
