WIGTOWNSHIRE Primary Schools football squad travelled to Dumfries last Saturday, winning the final competition of the season in style.

Fresh after winning the Urquhart Trophy at the begining of the month the Criffel-Micro is for Primary 6 pupils and below and only Ryan Hardie of Belmont was eligible from the last squad for this one.
Wigtownshire started their campaign against Upper Nithsdale and couldn't have off to a better start with the A team winning 4-2 and the B team hammering the opposition 4-0.
The second games were against Annandale and Eskdale and the good form continued and the A team were well on top with a 4-0 win and the B team in a titanic tussle sneaked a narrow 4-3 victory.
The third games were against Stewartry and the A team suffered a narrow defeat 4-3 but missed a penalty to make a draw but the B team made up ground with a good 3-0 win.
The final games were against their nearest rivals, Dumfries Burgh knowing that avoiding defeat in either game would secure the trophy but in the end there was nothing to worry about with the A team demolishing the Burgh and the B team lost their 100 per cent record in a 3-3 draw losing a goal with the last kick of the game.
This was a tremendous performance by the shire youngsters amassing 19 points, five ahead of their nearest rivals and scored 29 goals, a Criffel- Micro record.
Ian Lightbody selector paid tribute to the boys and remarked that the football they played was sensational, their passing, movement and chasing every lost cause was remarkable but also said that the training the boys were getting from Frank Coulston and Galloway Thistle have certainly improved the boys skills. It was then left for the shire captain, Jonathan Baxter from Shuechan school to lift the coveted trophy.
The Wigtownshire squad was Ryan Hardie, Lyle Avic, twins Gary and Stephen Hutton, (Belmont); Calum McDonald (Penninghamme); Connor Jolly (Minnigaff); Finlay Irons (Rephad); Jonathan Baxter (Sheuchan); James Hilton (St Josephs); Robert McColm (Sandhead). All primary 6 and the primary 5 pupils of Mark Fyfe and Rory Marshall (Portpatrick); Mark Craig (Wigtown), Fraser Anderson (Park); Rory Bennewith (Minnigaff) and Aaron McGuire (Port William).
