A BONANZA 26th Half Marathon took place on Saturday 23 May when 255 athletes took to the roads around Kirkcudbright.
The athletes appreciated the slightly cooler conditions although the wind did get up later in the day. Stall holders did a brisk trade - several selling out of goods and many charities benefited as a result. Some runners and many of the 191 walkers were sponsored for charities including the Neo Natal Unit at Cresswell, Yorkhill Hospital, RSPCA, the Stewartry Guides/Vine Trust Workparty to Peru, Kirkcudbright Rotary's Polio Plus appeal, several primary schools in the area, MS Society, Cancer charities, Barlochan Care home, Help4Heroes, Turning Point, Leukemia Research, Alcohol & Drugs Support, DEBRA, Christian Aid, Ugandan Hospital Appeal, Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Society, Loch Arthur, Muckhart Sunday School, Alzheimers, Tseikura Project., Myeoloma UK, animal charities and many others.
There were several athletes who took part for the first time and commented on the beautiful course and friendly atmosphere. For the 26th time James Munn, Gerard Macnamara and Kenny Patterson took part with Gerard and Kenny presenting the prizes at the finish.
There was lots of entertainment to keep spectators entertained from Red Kite Aikido to Highland and Scottish Country Dancing. Once again the Dog Show (sponsored by The Dog House) was a great success. (results below)
The staff, pupils and parents of Kirkcudbright Academy appreciate the help given by so many people. It is impossible to thank every individual but special mention has to be made of the contribution given by Dumfries & Galloway Police, local Red Cross members, Raynet, Summer Festivities, Bruce McKenzie, Harry Marland and the many local businesses who give support financially or in kind.
