Fly-ing high

A KIRKINNER man and his son are both angling to be the world champion fly-fisher when the competition comes to Scotland for the first time next June.
Calum Crosbie (46) and his 17-year-old son Rory have just completed another successful fishing season, both representing Scotland at senior and junior level.
Calum received his seventh Scotland cap at an international in Ireland in June where, in a very close match, the Scottish team finished in bronze medal position. As Calum was placed second in the Scottish side he automatically retains his place in the team next year.
For fishing enthusiasts, 2009 is shaping up to be a memorable year for Scottish fly-fishing as hosts to the world championships, a competition for which Calum has already qualified. He said: "To qualify I had to fish against 24 international fly-fishers over four days and four waters, totalling eight sessions. After which I finished in first position.
"It is the biggest event to come to Scotland for fly-fishing.
"Therefore, there has to be a lot of training and practising up until the event. As this comes at a fairly high cost, if there is anyone out there willing to help with any form of sponsorship I would be delighted to hear from them."
Meantime, son Rory is well on the way to following his dad's waders right to the top. He has fished for Scotland at youth level four times, the last at Loch Conn in Ireland in July where the Scots won bronze.
Both fishermen expressed their thanks to the Wigtownshire Sports Council for financial help and to Newton Stewart Angling Association for sponsorship.
