Young farmers compete for titles

On Friday, October 5, D&G Young Farmers Club held their annual district qualifiers for Member of the Year, Mr & Miss Young Farmer and quiz competition.

This was held at the Urr Valley Hotel, Castle Douglas.

Members from across the region attended to battle it out for the titles. The Mr & Miss and Member of the Year competition kicked off at 6.30pm where the competitors had a group interview with the judges. The judges on the evening were Mr & Mrs Young and Mr James Montgomerie. Once the group session was over the competitors were then interviewed individually.

Results as follows.

Member of the Year: 1. Hannah Burns (Stewartry YFC), 2. Bobby Landers (Machars YFC), 3. Danny Hair (Stranraer & Rhins YFC).

Hannah goes on to represent the district at the Scottish National Young Farmer Member of the Year Competition at Orkney in February 2013.

Mr Young Farmer: 1. Bobby Landers (Machers YFC), 2. Danny Hair (Stranraer & Rhins YFC), 3. Robert Young (Stewartry YFC).

Miss Young Farmer: 1. Hannah Burns (Stewartry YFC), 2. Libby Templeton (Machars YFC).

The top two from each category are now through to the West Area Mr & Miss Young Farmer Finals in Campbeltown on October 27.

At 8pm question master Ross Mair opened up the quiz to test the knowledge of our six young farmer clubs’ knowledge.

Results were: 1. Stranraer & Rhins YFC, 2. Machars YFC, 3. Thornhill YFC.

The three quiz teams have also qualified for the West Area Quiz at Campbeltown.

Dumfries & Galloway YFC would like to thank chairman Ross Mair and secretary Lisa Murchie for organising and running the evening, and also Mr & Mrs Young and Mr James Montgomerie who judged and made a great job and last but not least the competitors who made the night a success.
