Wine tasting comes to Kirkcudbright for one night only

People in the Stewartry will be able to tell their Chardonnays from their Pinot Grigios, and Malbecs from Cabernet Sauvignons, with a little help from The Co-operative Membership.

On Thursday (February 27), wine lovers will be able to sample a selection of The Co-operative’s award-winning Fairtrade wines from Argentina, at the Kirkcudbright Bowling Club.

The event will run from 7pm until 9pm, and will help guests discover a Fairtrade wine to suit most foods, palates and pockets. During the social evening a selection of nibbles will be served to complement the wines.

The event is part of Fairtrade Fortnight (24 February to 9 March), the annual celebration of the Fairtrade movement aimed at raising the profile of FAIRTRADE Mark products.

Fairtrade helps producers in developing countries by guaranteeing fair prices and providing an additional social premium to fund vital community projects.

The Co-operative Food is celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight 2014 with a host of money-saving deals on wine and food products, designed to encourage shoppers to give ethical alternatives a try. This year, the community retailer is celebrating 10 years of Fairtrade wine. The Co-operative, which has led the way in the development of Fairtrade, is the UK’s largest retailer of Fairtrade wine, selling 52.5% of all Fairtrade wine sold in the UK. To encourage shoppers to take the “Fairtrade Wine Challenge” - and choose a Fairtrade wine rather than their usual selection - it is offering 20 per cent off selected Fairtrade wines in-store to coincide with this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.

Carol Donaldson, The Co-operative’s Membership officer for South West Scotland, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to not only sample some great wines, but also learn about the fantastic work of Fairtrade, which enables people living in some of the world’s poorest countries to escape poverty and empower themselves and their families.”

The event is free for Co-operative members, but places are limited and booking in advance is advisable. To book, or for further information, go to , email, or call 01698 737560.
