HER Majesty the Queen has sent a letter to the members of the Whithorn Business Association to thank them for sending her a copy of their booklet, ‘The Queen’s visit to Whithorn 1955’, published to honour the Monarch’s Diamond Jubilee year.
Julia Muir Watt from the Business Association said: “We had forwarded the first copy of our booklet to the Palace and were delighted to receive a very prompt reply.
“The booklet is part of an effort by the Business Association to commemorate the Jubilee, including the renovation of a disused shop window for a small exhibition about the Queen’s visit and Royal memorabilia, kindly loaned by local people. The letter received from the Queen’s Lady in Waiting is among the items on display.
“The booklet reprints some of the official and unofficial photographs of the Royal visit in 1955, with an account of the preparations in Whithorn, the itinerary on the day and the Whithorn excavations which the Queen toured at the time. Local people have fond memories of the events and the identification of many faces in the photographs has renewed memories of the people, of the times and of the event.”
