TODAY (Thursday) sees voters take to the polls to choose seal the fate of our wannabe local councillors.Ahead of today’s voting, DUmfries and Galloway’s Returning Officer, Alex Haswell, and his team printed 120,000 ballot papers, issued 22,000 postal ballot packs and trained 400 polling station staff to ensure the 117,000 voters in Dumfries and Galloway can cast their vote.

These elections use the Single Transferable Vote format where voters number candidates in order of choice. They mark a 1 by their first choice candidate, a 2 by their second, a 3 by their third and so on.

Voters do not need to number all the candidates if they don’t want to but they will need to number at least one for their vote to count.
