THE sleepy town of Newton Stewart was put on red alert on Monday morning when half-a-dozen marauding Vikings were spied marching through the town.

The good folks of Newton were seen heading for cover before it was realised that the latest Viking invasion was a peaceful one.

The Timid Vikings of Reknaestuff, Norway, have come thousands of miles south to apologise for the “frankly outrageous behaviour of their forbears back in 793 AD during the Viking raids, when they nicked quite a bit of stuff in the area and caused a right old hoo-hah”.

Having parked their longboat somewhere on the east coast of Scotland this happy band are dedicating themselves to righting an ancient wrong by doing odd jobs like providing creche facilities, dog walking, car washing, shopping, gardening and general chores as they travel around Galloway. They will also serenade you with the “We’re sorry” song at the drop of a horned helmet.

Watch out for them in your town of village this weekend. You can’t miss them!
