THREE new honorary sheriffs installed at the closing Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court will be put to use in the west of the region.

Neil Cavers and Ross Ireland from firms in Kirkcudbright and Charles Laurie from Castle Douglas were installed at a ceremony in the Kirkcudbright courthouse - which has been in existence for almost 500 years - last week.

Sheriff Brian Lockhart, Sheriff Principal for South Strathclyde and Dumfries and Galloway, announced plans to use the new sheriffs at Stranraer Court.

The Sheriff Principal told the new honorary sheriffs and guests at the courthouse: “It may seem slightly odd to appoint honorary sheriffs at Kirkcudbright at a time when, as a result of the Scottish Parliament accepting proposals made by the Scottish Courts Service, this court closes at the end of November this year.

“The three gentlemen who are being appointed are being installed not as honorary sheriffs at Kirkcudbright Sheriff Court, but of the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde and Dumfries and Galloway in which they will continue to practice.

“There is always a need in Stranraer Sheriff Court one day a week when the Sheriff is elsewhere and it is my intention that the three gentlemen will be invited to sit as honorary sheriffs there.”

Honorary sheriffs are not currently required at Dumfries Sheriff Court, which has two full- time sheriffs.

He added: “The reason for the appointments is to pay public tribute to the very substantial contributions which the three appointees have made to the smooth running, efficiency and high standards which have always been the hallmark of Kirkcudbright, being the three principal participants who have appeared in this court.”
