OVER £8,000 was raised recently for Cancer Research UK following the successful Purple Thistle Ball in Wigtown, with donations still coming in.

Organised by local lass Cora Sharp, who was diagnosed last year with breast cancer at the age of just 34, the ball was a sell-out and hundreds enjoyed the evening - despite the torrential rain outside!

Fine dining in a marquee at Duncan Park followed by entertainment from Mystery Train and a top-prize auction MCd by Iain McFadzean, with donated lots such as Stena sailings and signed football and motor racing clothing, brought the cash tumbling in.

Even the vehicles stuck in the mud which were towed out by a handy tractor couldn’t ruin the night, and in fact gave the crowd a laugh.

Cora said: “Everyone who attended had a ball and I am overwhelmed at the level of support given and the generosity shown by so many people. It was lovely to have such fun whilst raising such a substantial sum for Cancer Research UK and they, like me, can’t thank everyone enough for showing they care.”
