Ten-pin bowling and laser game facility for Stranraer

Stranraer could be in line to house a brand new sports centre to service the west of Galloway.

Dumfries and Galloway Council agreed this week to support investigations into a Wigtownshire Community Sports Centre , an idea which has been on the cards for many years but which has never been pinned down to a set location.

The facility will include an indoor bowling facility, ten-pin bowling alleys, laser games, café, and a multi-purpose function room.

Council officers have been working with the sports centre committee, which is made up of members of the public from the local community, to develop a business plan which is now complete, but the next task is to identify a suitable location for the centre.

Several sites have been suggested, including the East Pier and Port Rodie Frontage.

But with Stena Line and the council still receiving tenders from organisations interested in developing the pier site, no plans can be determined until all tenders are in.

So instead, councillors suggested two additional sites for consideration – land adjacent to Agnew Park Pavilion and the former Marine Lake area, for which the council has already earmarked £410,000 in upgrades.

Councillors agreed this week to look more at the potential for Agnew Park to host the facility, but agreed it could be problematic with planning issues and could impact on the park’s ability to hold larger events.
