A TEENAGER was told by the sheriff at Kirkcudbright that he was lucky to be alive after crashing his car.
Sheriff Kenneth Robb heard that Luke Halliday had purchased two half-bottles of rum and had been drinking them with pals before the accident.
Halliday, 18, of Tongland Road, Kirkcudbright, was taken to hospital suffering from concussion where staff could smell alcohol.
Halliday’s car careered off the Dalbeattie to Gatehouse of Fleet Road, near Borgue, on October 7 last year and ended up an embankment straddling a ditch.
Halliday pleaded guilty to dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol and was fined £700 and banned from driving for 21 months.
Sheriff Robb said the public had to be protected and he ordered Halliday to sit the extended test of competency at the end of his disqualification.
