Newton Stewart Music Club held its annual Summer Soiree in Creetown last Saturday, at which a capacity audience of members and friends was entertained by the Beresford Trio.
Abby Hayward, cello, Edward Cohen, piano, and Jenny Stephenson, clarinet, are all recent graduates of the RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and are establishing careers as soloists and chamber musicians.
Their ensemble playing was superb in the various combinations heard at this performance – cello and piano in Beethoven’s Sonata in A major, clarinet and piano in Poulenc’s Sonata and all three instruments in Brahms’ Clarinet Trio in A minor.
Two lighter pieces ended the concert. First was the UK premiere performance of A Little Latin by Newton Stewart composer Russell Denwood., a lively piece in three short movements which suited the ensemble perfectly. The music continued in Latin-style with a selection of tangos by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla which rounded off the evening delightfully.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable end to Newton Stewart Music Club’s 2011/12 season. Next season starts on Sunday, October 14, with a concert by sextet Daniel’s Beard from Glasgow.
