Dumfries and Galloway Blackface Sheep Breeders held their sixth annual spring show held at Newton Stewart Auction Mart last week, by kind permission of Craig Wilson Ltd.

This event was again well attended by competitors and spectators.

The judge for the evening was Alan Rogerson of Burncastle Farming Company, Lauder.

Considering the past few months’ weather, it was a credit to all involved with stock preparation as to the standard of animals on display. There were a few new exhibitors and the entry numbers were high, with 73 sheep forward and an abundance of stock judging and raffle tickets sold.

The champion came in the form of a home-bred tup hogg from well-established local breeders Messrs Ramsay of Milnmark, Dalry.

The Ramsays again dominated many of the classes with winners in the bought tup hogg class, the ewe class and the champion in the home-bred tup hogg class. This tup hogg is by an £11,000 Auldhouseburn and out of a ewe by the £6000 Milnmark who had herself stood reserve champion at the 2012 spring show.

Reserve champion went to a ewe hogg from another distinguished flock, Troloss farms, herded by Mr Joe Cockburn. This strong hogg was by an £1100 Connachan and out of a home-bred ewe.

The winner of the stockjudging trophy, judged on the champion class, was Mr Joe Paterson, Gatehouse of Fleet. Thanks to all who attended, exhibited and sponsored the event and once again made the 2013 spring show a success.

Class results were as follows.

Class 1: Aged Tup – 1. Glen, Gatehouse, 2. Drannandow, 3. Drannandow, 4. Larg, Creetown; Class 2: Tup Hogg – 1. Milnmark, 2. Little Larg, 3. Little Larg, 4.
