The woman killed on the hard shoulder of the M6 near Penrith on Wednesday has been named as Christine McGuire from Antrim Avenue in Stranraer.

A statement from Mrs McGuire’s family said the 67-year old doted on her grandchildren.

She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Andrew, two sons and three grandchildren.

In a statement released through Cumbria Police, her family said: “Christine had been involved in nursing for many years, working latterly at Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer, and enjoyed her work very much.

“She loved doing crosswords, and doted on her grandchildren Adam, Katie and Kirsty for whom she did a lot of childcare. She will be missed very much.

The 73-year-old man driving the other car was uninjured in Wednesday’s crash.
