‘Storm Frank’ to hit south west

The Met Office has put out an amber ‘be prepared’ warning for the south west through Tuesday night and into Wednesday as ‘Storm Frank’ heads towards the area from the Atlantic.

A met Office spokesperson said: “Much of Tuesday will be dry with some sunshine. However, towards evening cloud and wind will move in from the west, with rain and severe gales reaching western Scotland during as Storm Frank passes by to the northwest of Scotland.

“Stormy conditions are expected overnight and through most of Wednesday with gales and persistent, heavy rain across Galloway. We have Amber, be prepared, National Severe Weather Warnings in place for the rain and everyone should be aware of the potential for disruption from flooding and the impacts of the gales to transport.

“We are expecting 20-40 mm widely across the area, with 80 mm over some higher ground and the potential for some exposed locations in southwest Scotland to receive 100-150 mm. Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely quite widely, with gusts reaching 70-80 mph in exposed areas.

“The weather is particularly unsettled at the moment and we advise everyone to stay up to date with the latest Met Office forecasts and warnings and find out what to do in severe weather so they can plan ahead for the expected weather before it arrives. “This is has been a record breaking month for rainfall in some parts of the UK, with exceptional amounts of rain falling onto already saturated ground. This includes Dumfries and Galloway where Eskdalemuir has recorded a new December record of 500.0mm in the first 27 days of the month This is more than two and half times the December average of 184.9mm. The previous wettest was December 2014 with 390.4mm.”
