Sale success with 6000 gns top price

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas staged the 21st Annual Premier Show and Sale of Salers Cattle on behalf of the Salers Cattle Society on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3.

At the show on the Friday, the champion ticket went to Lot 53 from Mr A McKenzie, Whitebog, Fortrose. Whitebog Glenlivet is a March 2011-born son of Seawell Diplomat. He went on to sell for 4200 gns to Mr J McIntosh, Genoch Mains, Stranraer.

Reserve Overall Champion was Lot 8 Cumbrian Vermille from Mr B Walling, Farmstock Genetics, Over Whitlaw, Selkirk. Born in November 2010, she was AI’d to Cumbrian Joker. She sold for 4000gns to Messrs McKenzie Bros, Westfield, Thurso.

Top price of the day was another in-calf heifer from Farmstock Genetics Lot 7 – Cumbrian Volute 496 which was Reserve Female Champion and sold for 6000gns. Top-priced bull was Lot 45 Darnford Dynamite from David Watston, Darnford, Banchory. It sold for 4800gns to Messrs Howatson, Risk Farms, Newton Stewart.

In the commercial section, all classes of heifers were extremely well bid for, enclosing their reputation as the ideal suckler cow. Buyers from as far apart as Orkney to Devon and from Ireland and Wales witnessed a fantastic trade. Leading the In-Calf Heifers at £1800 were a pen of three from A & M Austin, Stanbury Manor, followed at £1750 for a pair from Mains of Penninghame. Bulling heifers sold to £1400 for a pair from R & K LIvesey, Firth Farm, Lilliesleaf, Melrose, while heifer stirks topped at £1380 for the Reserve Champion pen from W Davidson, Poldean. The Champion pen from G McClymont, Cuil, made £1300.
