The Rotary Club of Newton Stewart were given a grant of £1375 by the Wigtown Area Committee on Wednesday towards the cost of their community bonfire and fire woks display in November.
The money from the area committee’s discretionary budget, is a percentage of the total costs of £2968 and is granted on a underwrite basis.
The money will be used to purchase approximately £2000 worth of fireworks, adding variety and increasing the attractiveness of the event. Funding for the remaining costs has been secured from local business sponsorship.
The event has been running for 21 years and the display reduces the need for families to have fireworks displays within their own gardens therefore reducing the risk of accidents.
Port William Community Association received £485.09 towards the costs of staging the village’s annual carnival week and The Museum, Newton Stewart, received £310.37 to help with running costs.
