Kirkcudbright Fairtrade Group recently took on the 90-kilo Rice Challenge – and completed it.
The rice comes from Malawi where a producer, if given the opportunity of a fair price, can earn enough from selling 90 kilos of rice to send one of his children to secondary school for a year, as there is no free secondary education in Malawi.
The group bought in the 90-kilo consignment in July and over the past few weeks in Kirkcudbright, at the Garden & Country Fair, the Arts & Crafts Trail & at a Parade Day stall, has sold the entire 90 kilos.
Thanks are expressed to all who supported the project and as a result have had a direct effect on one child’s life.
