WITH the ballot paper finally counted, Patsy Gilroy, Conservative; Jane Maitland, Independent and Colin Wyper, Independent were all elected to the Dee Ward of Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Colin Wyper was the runaway winner with 1473 votes followed by Jane Maitland on 742 and former council convenor Patsy Gilroy on 728. These were the votes cast at the first preference stage.
The number of votes cast was 4034.
Jane Maitland, contesting her fourth term, said: “I am a strong advocate of the STV system as it really gives a fair spread and Dee ward has certainly been helped in that area with so many candidates, I think it’s great to see such a geographical spread. I have done what I can by getting up every farm road and speaking to the people. I don’t believe you can just leaflet for this, you have to graft.”
In the Castle Douglas and Glenkens Ward, the three candidates returned were Finlay Carson, Conservatives; Brian Collins, SNP and George Prentice, Independent.
At the first preference stage, Finlay Carson received 904 votes with Brian Collins and George Prentice both getting 797 each.
The number of valid voted in that Ward was 3338.
