Have your say

Lauren Fingland is especially looking forward to her year as Port William Carnival Queen as the community week has been central to family life since she was born.

Fourteen-year-old Lauren, who is now in her fourth year at the Douglas Ewart High School, says she is looking froward to meeting everyone who attended the events in the village and asfaras she is concerned, the highlight has always been Thursday’s fancy dress night.

Lauren’s late great-grandparents Bill and Molly Hawthorn were stalwarts of Port William Carnival Week since it started in 1950 and both served the village down the decades, with Bill having his traditional role of leading children in their fancy dress outfits into the Square for judging. They would be proud today of their granddaughter who following family tradition by doing her bit for the community spirt in the village.

The teenager says she hopes to train as a midwife when she leaves school but will be sad to leave the “quiet” village she grew up in.

“Port William’s a great place to live with great views” she said.
