Police investigate new scam

Police in Newton Stewart are investigating a ‘ringing the changes’ scam which saw the theft of £40 from the Wigtown Road Service Station in Newton Stewart on Sunday, November 8.

A policespokesperson said; “At around 1314 hours that day a man described as in his 30s, of Asian appearance, about 5’8” tall, slim build with a beard and was dressed all in black and wearing a clack hat, entered the garage and asked to change a quantity of £20 notes into £10 notes. The man then changed his mind a number of times as is usual with this type of scam, and when he left it was later discovered that £40 had been stolen.” Constable Graeme Stewart at Newton Stewart said: “the man who carried out this theft seemed to be well versed in how to confuse the attendant and the theft was not actually discovered until the end of the shift. Anyone who may have experienced a similar type of scam, or who can help identify the man who carried it our is asked to call us at Newton Stewart on 101.”
