There will be no official switch on of the Christmas lights in Newton Stewart this year.

Officials from the Cree Valley Community Council, who normally organise the switch-on celebrations, have said that, due to timing issues with CVCC members being on holiday and a key member recovering from illness, there is no special event for 2016.

A spokesperson for the CVCC said: “There will be no “official switch on event, the festive lights in the main street will be switched on as soon as the contractors have them safe and ready to go”.

Mid Galloway Councillor Graham Nicol commented that he as “ very disappointed” at the news.

“When I go round all the community councils in the Machars, all the other town and villages appear to be able to get this organised, yet the biggest town in the Machars can’t.

“I feel sorry for everyone, especially the children, that due to unforeseen circumstances this cannot be organised.”
