Newton stewart’s Hut project gets £10k grant boost

Newton Stewart Initiative has received a grant of £10,000 from The Holywood Trust, Dumfries, towards the renovation costs of The Hut in the town.

The Initiative hope to start the building work very soon with the expectation that The Hut will be a base for youth work for the next five years but under a new name.

An Newton Stewart Initiative spokesperson said: “We are just awaiting on the last of the cost adjustments to come in as a disabled toilet and disable access has been decided on.

“These renovations will bring the building up to an operational standard which would enable not only youth work to be delivered once again to Newton Stewart, but also allow other community groups to hire the premises, at affordable rates. With this in mind, then we will be renaming the premises.

“To date, through lots of participation in local events that we have organised and been apart of during these past months, we continue to raise monies to put in to the NSI piggy bank. Creetown Initiative who currently look after the Youth Group will be the first to use the new upgraded premises, and will continue to provide the youth events.

They have also sought £2,000 of funding.

“We are currently talking to some of the local groups and are very hopeful that we will secure their commitment to hold their get togethers here. Should your local group need somewhere, then please get in touch with us at newtonstewartinitiative@gmail.com”
