A RECYCLING centre for Newton Stewart, open seven days a week, was given the go-ahead by councillors on Wednesday.
Land currently used as a car park for roads department staff at the Barnkirk depot has been identified for the scheme. The car park will be relocated nearby.
The plans outline a one-way system around the development which would house skips and bins for wood, paper, glass, garden refuse, batteries, electricals and more.
At present, the only waste management sites in Galloway are at Stranraer, Whithorn and Castle Douglas. No concerns have been raised by any consultees on the proposals.
Vague worry was raised in a report to the council by planning officer Billy Murray that great-crested newts had been found in the area but a condition is recommended that, should any be found during construction, work would stop.
Winter will see the site operating in darkness and another condition states any lighting is designed sensitively to minimise the impact on the nearby Dark Sky Park. The centre is set to be open from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
