A forty-four-year-old man from Newton Stewart was convicted of rape at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday after a jury trial and will be sentenced next month.
Douglas McCleary, a prisoner in Dumfries, attacked and raped the 37-year-old woman at a house in the town in August last year.
At the trial he had admitted repeatedly punching the woman on the head and body but denied raping her, claiming that the sex had been consensual. He also claimed she assaulted him but the jury didn’t believe his version of events.
The court also heard that during the assault McCleary prevented the woman from climbing out of a window and threatened to kill her.
Judge Lord Tyre ordered McCleary to be placed on the sex offenders register and told him: “I will be considering a substantial period of imprisonment when I come to pass sentence.”
