PRIME & CAST SHEEP

Craig Wilson Ltd, Livestock Auction Mart, Queen Steet, Newton Stewart had forward 894 sheep compromising 85 new season lambs, 663 prime hoggets, 146 cast ewes & rams. Prime lambs sold to a top price of 228.9p/kg for a pen of 45kg Suffolk lambs from J & A McCornick, Drumjargon, Whauphill with the overall average being 217.2p/kg (+20.1p). Export lambs were keenly bid for whilst leaner lambs met a similar trade to last week. A larger show of hoggets sold to a top price of 201.1p/kg for an outstanding pen of 42kg Cheviots from Mactier Bros, Cairndoon, Whithorn with the overall average being 180.2p/kg (+14.1p on the week). Well fleshed hoggets were well in demand whilst plainer types were steadier on the week.

Cast ewes were £5 to £8 per head sharper than last week with the overall average being £72.43 per head. Top price was £100 for a pen of Texel ewes from B Corcoran, Viewfield, Wigtown.

Cast tups met the dearest trade so far this season selling to a top price of £142 for a pen of Texels from Galdenoch Farmers, Galdenoch, New Luce.
