FANS of BBC1’s popular Masterchef series will be interested to learn that one of the favourites for the title this year has a strong connection to Newton Stewart.
Thirty-two-year old Andrew Kojima, a research analyst from London is the graandson of Steve and Nora McKie, who many will remember ran the Glencarin Hotel in the town in the 1960s.
The McKie’s daughter Eunice moved to London many years ago where she met and married a Japanese businessman.
Eunice still keeps in touch with her great friend Annie Hyslop from Bowbrig near Whauphill.
Annie told the Gazette that she is glued to the telly every Wednesday night watching Andrew weave his magic in the kitchen. He has impressed the judges more and more each week and is now in the last eight.
Annie said: “I an really rooting for him and I hope he wins. He is a really nice person with a lovely smile and I can tell you his mum taught him to cook!”
