A new railway crossing has been fitted at Dunragit to replace the UK’s “most-hit bridge”.

The old Challoch Bridge went down in history as the most-struck crossing in the country as lorry after lorry became wedged underneath it on an alomst-weekly basis.

But now the new bypass is fully operational and the former A75 route through the village is no longer on the main Stranraer-Gretna road, the bridge could be replaced.

Engineers worked through the night on Sunday to ready the railway line for the 7.10am train from Stranraer to Glasgow, with the bridge being lifted into position at round 3am.
