A new bench seat has been installed on the Harbour Green in Port William in memory of the late George Murray.
George was chairman of Port William Community Council when the possibility of buying the green for the community was raised. George negotiated the transfer to the community council for £1 and set to clearing the area of a whole skip load of scrap iron and general rubbish, before strimming it and bringing it into a condition where it could be mown.
Harbour Green is now a valuable community resource with a wishing well, bench seats and picnic tables provided by the community council’s Village Improvements Fund and is well used by locals and visitors.
In dedicating the seat to George’s memory, the Rev Mary McLauchlan thanked, on behalf of George’s widow, Annie, the community council, Community Association and Community Development Trust, all of which shared the cost of providing the seat.
