SNP MSP for the South of Scotland Aileen McLeod welcomed confirmation from Health Secretary Alex Neil that NHS Dumfries & Galloway has made progress with recruiting medical staff to work at the Galloway Community Hospital.
Aileen raised the issue during health portfolio questions in the Scottish Parliament on Wednesday and was advised by the Health Secretary that NHS Dumfries & Galloway has recruited an additional 2.5 whole-time equivalent doctors, with the result that there are no uncovered shifts in the rotas until January.
Aileen said: “This is clearly progress on the part of NHS Dumfries & Galloway and it is very welcome. Equally clearly further progress will need to be made to ensure that the hospital is appropriately staffed for the long term to ensure that people in Stranraer and the surrounding area have access to the medical services they need.
“I am encouraged by this however and will continue to work with the local pressure group, the Health Secretary and NHS Dumfries & Galloway to make sure we can overcome the problems with recruitment and guarantee people access to services locally.”
