Youth has its say

Four of the region’s Youthbank funding assessors recently joined other young people from across Scotland to take part in a three-day training and team-building residential programme.
The event, organised by Youthbank Scotland, was held at Dounan’s Outdoor Education centre in Aberfoyle, in the Trossachs, and consisted of a busy programme of training, group work, team-building, presentations, outdoor activities and an AGM. The Introduction to Grant Making training provides young people with the opportunity to develop their skills in Youthbank funding assessment and management, from which they will gain a SVQF level 4-5.
Dumfries and Galloway Youthbank assessors Jordan Smith, 17, from Stranraer, Tarah Malcolmson, 23, from Dumfries, and Adam Wilson, 16, from Lockerbie took part in the accredited training programme. Caitlin McDowell, 16, from Glenluce, also attended the course and, although she has already gained her SVQF Introduction to Grant Making qualification, she was elected on to the national Youthbank board during the AGM.
Jordan, who became a Youthbank assessor earlier this year said: “The residential was a learning experience because we got to see how other Youthbanks work and it gave us ideas for our own [D&G] Youthbank. Through the training programme not only did I gain a national SVQF qualification but my confidence has increased loads and towards the end of the residential I found it so much easier to mingle and take part more.”
Youthbank is a youth-led, grant-giving initiative that encourages groups of young people to apply for money to put their good ideas in to action. Trained Youthbank assessors, who are young people aged 12-25, examine the applications, make site visits and have the final say on which groups get the money. The maximum grant amount for D&G’s Youthbank is £750.
