Young swine flu victim sent home

AN 18-month old who contracted a strain of swine flu has gone home.

Two cases were confirmed in the region this week, with one hitting a pregnant woman and landing her in intensive care.

But NHS bosses have been quick to point out that this is not unusual.

Derek Cox, Director of Public Health, said: “This week, NHS Dumfries and Galloway has confirmed two cases of H1N1. I can confirm that these are by no means the first cases of this particular variety of flu that have been seen either in Dumfries and Galloway or in Scotland as a whole.

“I take this opportunity to stress that these incidents are very normal for this time of year, and various types of influenza are circulating in the community at levels encountered most winters.

“The H1N1 variety is no more infectious, and causes no more serious complications as other varieties of ‘flu.

“Locally, we are aware of concerns being raised by parents who are worried about bringing their children into Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary to attend appointments. I reassure parents not to be concerned. If you have an appointment, it is absolutely fine to attend these as normal.

“Everyone who has already had the normal seasonal flu vaccination this winter has already been vaccinated against H1N1.

“As has been our consistent advice, anyone who is in the at-risk groups for flu (older people, and people with various chronic conditions like heart disease, lung diseases and diabetes, and also pregnant women) should be aware that it is still not too late to get the ‘flu vaccination from their GP surgery.

“Anyone worried about flu-like symptoms, can contact their GP or NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24.”
