Wind farm proposals for Glenluce

A NEW wind farm proposal for land at Glenluce is on the cards after West Coast Energy Ltd, on behalf of Barlockhart Wind Energy Ltd, announced they are finalising plans which have been in motion for five years.

The land at Barlockhart Moor, occupying fields to the south of the A75 and east of the A747, was first identified as a potential candidate for the four-turbine wind farm development by the companies during their search for suitable areas in the region.

A spokesperson for West Coast Energy said: "Over recent years, various technical, economical and environmental appraisals have been undertaken to confirm the viability of the site for development as a wind farm.

"A formal scoping request was issued to Dumfries and Galloway Council and various stakeholders in October 2007. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), Historic Scotland, SEPA and various other organisations were also consulted for their views and opinions."

At this preliminary stage, the wind farm is expected to comprise of four wind turbines, each with a maximum hub height of 60m and a vertical blade tip height of up to 102m. Each turbine will have an installed capacity of between 2 and 2.5 megawatts (MW).

The spokesperson added: "The wind farm development as a whole would have an installed capacity of up to 10MW - the electricity generated from such a development would be equivalent to meeting the requirements of more than 5500 households."

As part of the community consultation process, an exhibition is to be held on 4th June from 2pm until 7.30pm at Glenluce Bowling Club, School Road, Glenluce. The exhibition will feature extensive display material and there will be an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the proposal with West Coast Energy Limited company representatives.

A formal planning submission is likely later in the year.
