Wigtown to have new school route signage and bollards
SAFER Routes to School plans were passed last week for streets around Wigtown Primary School which will now see parts of New Road, Lochancroft Lane, Low Vennel and High vennel fitted with traffic calming measures.
Two objections had been raised against the plans for the Book town - an “archaeologically sensitive area”, according to council papers. Malcolm Booth and Nicholas Walker, both of Bank Street in the town, said the proposed signage would detract from the conservation area and claimed that traffic speed is already reduced by the nature of parking in the area.
Proposed build-outs at the New Road/Lochancroft Lane junctions and part-time, solar-powered 20mph signs will also be put in place. No speed humps are proposed.
Councillor Sandra McDowall who lives in Wigtown said that a Safer Routes to School plan was overdue. She added this week that when dropping her grandchildren off at the school, she noticed a refuse lorry collecting bins from the grounds at the same time children were being dropped off and asked that an agreement be looked at to delay the refuse collection until school had begun.
