Wigton, Dumfries and Galloway?

ROAD signs at Newton Stewart roundabout left some motorists chuckling to themselves this week as they were being directed to Cumbria's Wigton instead of Galloway's Wigtown.

A spelling error at the production stage meant that signs delivered to the scene of roadworks on the roundabout read Wigton - which is almost 100 miles away.

An Amey Highways spokeswoman said the mistake was spotted as soon as the signs were delivered and new ones were ordered straight away.

She added: "We had to decide whether to put them up as they were or just wait for the new ones.

"But in the interest of keeping the traffic flowing, we felt it best to just put them up and replace them when the new ones turned up."

The roadworks being carried out are to replace lighting along the roadside and are due to be completed within the next two weeks.

Some motorists wondered if a car ferry was being laid on by the company to sail cars across the Solway Firth...
