Wicker Man hotel for sale
TWO well-known Galloway hotels, including one made famous in The Wicker Man, are on the market at reduced prices.
The Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel, owned by Gordon and Kay Ward, has had its price reduced to offers in the region of £595,000, while the Ellangowan, in Creetown, is availabel for offers around £200,000.
Originally, the Corsewall was priced at offers in the region of £695,000. However, after discussing the situation with their family, and because they would like to retire, Mr and Mrs Ward decided to move with the current market conditions and reduce the price in the hope of generating significant interest and a successful sale.
Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel is one of the most outstanding properties in Dumfries and Galloway. It is set within approximately 19 acres and the grounds incorporate some of Scotland’s most spectacular coastline, allowing guests to enjoy fine panoramic sea views. The hotel is an A-listed building of major national importance. It is still a working lighthouse and the hotel has been trading on the site for approximately 15 years.
The business has a three-star grading from the AA and is listed in the Johansson’s Guide and Good Hotel Guide. It hotel currently trades with six letting rooms and three suites/self-catering units. There is also a restaurant, lounge and conservatory.
Graeme Smith, who is handling thr sale at Christie & Co’s Glasgow office, commented: “Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel is an extremely exciting business proposition for any discerning purchaser. Over the years, it has had lots of press and television publicity, which has helped its standing in the marketplace.
“The hotel is registered to carry out religious and civil ceremonies and it has been the venue for a number of weddings over the years. A marquee wedding for around 200 people took place at the hotel in 2011, which shows that a new owner could develop that aspect of the business.”
The Ellangowan is better known to film buffs as the fictional Green Man from the iconic 1973 film, The Wicker Man, where the pints were pulled by Britt Eckland and supped by Edward Woodward as he investigated the mysterious Summerisle.
Nowadays the Ellangowan is a conventional nine-bedroom village hotel with popular bar and catering facilities.
The hotel is for sale on behalf of the trustee in the sequestration of the former owner who had operated the Ellangowan for almost 25 years.
Alistair Letham, a director with selling agents Colliers International, said: “With the Ellangowan Hotel being offered for sale at a significantly reduced price, a good response from buyers is expected.
“Of course, the Ellangowan attracts a significant of film fans who visit the area to take in the locations seen in The Wicker Man. Sadly, Britt Eckland is no longer working behind the bar, but the visitors to the bar partake in a lot less sacrifice than seen in the film, making it a popular local venue.”
