Whithorn submariner attacked love rival

A FORMER Whithorn man who is now a Royal Navy submariner was spared jail for attacking his wife’s lover after catching them in bed together.

Stephen Bell, 31, now of Plymstock, Devon, attacked fellow-sailor Christopher Beer after tracking his wife, Lynsey, to Mr Beer’s home in June.

Exeter Crown Court heard last week that Bell attacked Mr Beer with a glass, bathroom scales and a cabinet, leaving him with head and arm wounds. Bell also admitted a previous incident of assaulting Mr Beer with a child’s baseball bat.

He was given a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work. The judge told him he would spare him a jail term as the country had invested a lot in him as a Royal Navy specialist.
