A KEEN Whithorn gardener has scooped a top prize for having a bumblebee-friendly garden.

Peter Buxton’s blossoming back garden was highly commended in the large garden category of the Bee Kind Awards by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and was one of 5,000 entrants.

Peter said: “I’m obviously flattered and surprised at the commendation as the garden is a personal creation. I don’t aim to be too tidy but do try to have flowers and vegetables all year around. Bees are essential to this, particularly for the yields from the likes of runner beans and fruit trees.”

The UK currently has 24 types of bumblebees an gardens like Peter’s are essential in maintaining them, as their numbers are in steep decline due to changes in agriculture destroying their natural habitats.

Peter also helps out with local gardening group, The Whithorn Evergreens, whose Castlehill Memory Garden project in 2009 included two biodiverse beds which are doing very well, hence it was the subject of a special endeavour award from Beautiful Scotland,

Peter’s garden scored highly for bee-friendliness on account of the flowers which had been planted, which included Sweet peas, Runner beans and Geraniums.

Photos of the winning gardens will be featured in a special 2013 Calendar, on sale from the BBCT website in the run up to Christmas.
