West hit with bouts of flooding

SEVERAL roads were rendered almost impassable on Wednesday after torrential rain and winds hit the region.

The Kelton and Rhonehouse areas near Castle Douglas saw some roads awash with rivers of water and reports of almost impassable stretches at Stoneykirk saw many motorists avoiding the area completely.

The A75 between Stranraer and Newton Stewart left traffic crawling throughout the afternoon and into the evening, while further south the sea swept over the route to Drummore, leaving seaweed and debris across the road.

None of the major routes were closed, however, and recent groundworks in certain areas seem to have achieved the goal of reducing flooding.

The west came off well compared to the east, where some residents of homes were evacuated by fire and rescue personnel in Dumfries and Lockerbie.

A flood warning from SEPA remained in place until yesterday (Thursday) evening but a relatively calm and pleasant weekend is firecast, with spells of sunshine bringing some relief from the rain.
